Il documentario biografico su Greta Thunberg disponibile su Prime Video
Nel 2018 una bambina bionda con le trecce si è seduta fuori dal parlamento svedese, in sciopero dalla scuola fino alle elezioni, chiedendo che il governo si allineasse agli obiettivi dell’accordo di Parigi. Accanto a lei solo qualche curioso e il cartello - diventato iconico - con la scritta “Skolstrejk för klimatet” (sciopero della scuola per il clima). Quella bambina era Greta Thunberg, 15 anni, di Stoccolma.
Il documentario sulla sua crociata internazionale non poteva non iniziare da qui, da quando nemmeno Greta ancora immaginava chi sarebbe diventata. I am Greta - Una forza della natura, diretto dallo svedese Nathan Grossman, presentato alla 77° Mostra del Cinema di Venezia il 3 settembre 2020 e disponibile su Prime Video, segue le battaglia di Greta sin dai suoi inizi. Pare che il regista si sia interessato alla vicenda dopo aver ricevuto la soffiata della protesta da parte di alcuni amici vicini ai genitori della bimba, con l’idea di realizzare un cortometraggio; in poco tempo il seguito di Greta è aumentato a dismisura e l’attenzione dei media si è puntata su di lei, facendone un simbolo dell’attivismo nella lotta alla crisi climatica senza precedenti. Grossman ha iniziato a seguirla in ogni dove, durante tutto l’anno in cui Greta ha rinunciato alla scuola per portare il suo messaggio in giro per mondo. I am Greta racconta di questo viaggio, della sincera quanto ingenua ambizione di una giovane donna di cambiare il mondo.
Chi è Greta
Quando tutto iniziò Greta aveva 15 anni, da due le era stata diagnosticata la sindrome di Asperger, che può comportare un disturbo ossessivo compulsivo e lunghi momenti di mutismo selettivo.
Accompagnata e supportata dal padre, Greta ha ispirato un’intera generazione, che è scesa in strada per urlare la propria delusione nei confronti di governi che non hanno mai dato la necessaria priorità alla lotta al cambiamento climatico.
Anche dopo le elezioni svedesi, Greta ha continuato a manifestare ogni venerdì dando vita al movimento studentesco internazionale Fridays for Future; ha partecipato al Rise for Climate davanti al Parlamento Europeo a Bruxelles e ha preso parola durante l’Extinction Rebellion a Londra. Centinaia di manifestazione simili sono state organizzate nei successivi due anni in tutto il mondo, al motto di “make the world Greta again”.
Le critiche
Non si sprecano le critiche nei confronti di Greta, soprattutto da parte della destra americana e dei negazionisti della crisi climatica, che non avendo argomentazioni valide prendono in causa la sindrome di Asperger per denigrare la sua missione. C’è chi accusa i genitori di sfruttare l’immagine della figlia, chi ancora critica a Greta di essere troppo emotiva e di non proporre soluzioni utili, quando chiedere di farlo a una quindicenne sarebbe davvero troppo. Greta viene invitata a parlare davanti ai vertici più alti dell’organizzazione politica mondiale, il Papa e numerosi capi di stato chiedono di incontrarla. La maggior parte delle volte le viene chiesto di fare un selfie, gli adulti le chiedono della scuola, quando prende parola e accusa senza mezzi termini tutti i nostri rappresentanti di fare promesse a vuoto, gli stessi la guardano sorridendo, inteneriti.
La bellezza di I am Greta sta soprattutto nel mostrare la Greta del dietro le quinte e la sua matura consapevolezza di essere stata spesso solo sfruttata dalle autorità come simbolo, la sofferenza nel non essere ascoltata, le critiche ignoranti sulla sua persona, le difficoltà oggettive dello spostarsi in giro per il mondo senza aerei, e nonostante tutto la determinazione nel continuare in nome del nostro futuro.

In 2018, a blonde girl with braids sat outside the Swedish parliament, on strike from school until the elections, demanding that the government align itself with the objectives of the Paris Agreement. Next to her only a few curious onlookers and the sign - which has become iconic - with the words "Skolstrejk för klimatet" (school strike for climate). That little girl was Greta Thunberg, 15, from Stockholm.
The documentary about her international crusade could only start here, since not even Greta imagined who she would become. I am Greta - A Force of Nature, directed by Swede Nathan Grossman, presented at the 77th Venice Film Festival on September 3, 2020 and available on Prime Video, follows Greta’s battles from her beginnings.
It seems that the director took an interest in the story after being tipped-off about the protest from friends close to the girl's parents, with the idea of making a short film; soon, Greta's following increased dramatically and the media turned its attention to her, making her a symbol of activism in the struggle against the unprecedented climate crisis. Grossman began following her everywhere during the entire year Greta refused to attend school to take her message around the world.
I Am Greta speaks of this journey, of the sincere yet naïve ambition of a young woman to change the world.
Who Greta is
It all began when Greta was 15 years old, and it had been two years since she had been diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, which can result in obsessive compulsive disorder and long moments of selective mutism. Accompanied and supported by her father, Greta inspired an entire generation, which took to the streets to shout its frustration at governments that have never given the necessary priority to the fight against climate change. Even after the Swedish elections, Greta continued to demonstrate every Friday, creating the international student movement Fridays for Future; she participated in the Rise for Climate call to action before the European Parliament in Brussels and spoke during the Extinction Rebellion event in London. Hundreds of similar events were held over the next two years around the world, with the motto "make the world Greta again".
Criticism
No criticism is spared against Greta, especially from the American right and climate crisis deniers, who, having no valid arguments, focus on her Asperger's syndrome in order to belittle her mission. There are those who accuse the parents of exploiting their daughter’s image, others who criticize Greta for being too emotional and not proposing useful solutions, when asking a fifteen-year-old to do such a thing would really be too much.
Greta is invited to speak before the upper echelons of the world political organization, and the Pope and numerous heads of state ask to meet her. Most of the time she is asked to take a selfie, adults ask her about school, when she takes the floor and bluntly accuses all our representatives of making empty promises, they look at her smiling with tenderness. The beauty of I Am Greta lies most importantly in showing a behind-the-scenes Greta and her mature awareness that she has often only been exploited by the authorities as a symbol, the despair of not being heard, the ignorant criticism of her appearance, the objective difficulties of moving around the world without airplanes, and despite it all, the determination to continue in the name of our future.
